It’s difficult to draw a correlation between NBA Summer League stats and future fantasy potential; just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean that it isn’t a worthwhile endeavor. While players like Anthony Randolph (2009 – 26.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.2 spg, 3.0 bpg) barely provide fantasy value once the “real” games start, a second round pick like Marcus Thornton (2009 – 20.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.3 spg) can demonstrate his future potential to fantasy owners that are willing to do their research. Thornton was a late round / undrafted free agent in many fantasy leagues during the 2009-10 basketball season, but was owned in 90+ percent of leagues by the time the fantasy playoffs rolled around. Damian Lillard (PG / POR) continues to impress in Las Vegas. In rookie-only fantasy drafts, I expect Lillard to go no worse than sixth… My current Top 10: Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Harrison Barnes, Damian Lillard, Bradley Beal, Dion Waiters, Thomas Robinson, Royce White, Andrew Nicholson, and Austin Rivers. Lillard’s stats on Thursday: 31 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 turnovers.
Early reports indicate that the Bobcats plan to feature combo-guard Kemba Walker (PG / CHA) this season. If his summer league stats are any indication of what owners can expect, then he should be a mid round draft choice in October: 19 points, 4 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals, and 2 turnovers.
Second-year small forward Jordan Hamilton (DEN) is having an impressive summer league (averaging 19 points and 6.7 rebounds per game), but he’ll struggle to earn playing time this season. He’ll go undrafted in October; keep him in on your radar if a few players get injured: 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 3 turnovers.
